Hi!
My name is Willa and this is my portfolio for my grade nine year at Collingwood school.
On this site I am supposed to express who I am through my Science, Socials, and English work over the next year. Basically, the goal of this weebly is to show everyone who I am, who I plan to be as I grow up and what I strive to do later In life (plus it makes marking easier for the teachers, but that's beside the initial point!) So this is me, the purple, the layout and even the pictures, which bring me to my next point. I was assigned to show people my favorite place in the world using one picture, and that is the image above. Now I know what many might be thinking "but this is just a flower! How can it possibly give enough information to ever show ones favorite place in the world?" I agree that it is a flower, but, its not JUST any old flower from Vancouver, this one is from Belize. Over spring break 2013 I traveled to Belize and in doing that I learned a lot about different cultures, and I also when traveling to expect the unexpected. What I mean is Belize's culture is different in many ways from most in that area, firstly being that their official language is English. The reason that Belize is one of the few central American counties to speak English is because it was settled by the English and became an crowned English colony in 1862 where it was then known as "The Colony of British Honduras". If you travel there it is quite interesting to see their influences in, food, architecture and daily life. In Belize i spent a week on the mainland and then spent the second week of my spring break sailing. Ever since I was little I have taken sailing over the summer and my trip was one of the first time I could use my skills to help out around the boat. Overall the sailing was an amazing experience not only because Belize's naturally landscape in beautiful, but also because when you reach many of the small islands the culture is even richer and there is much more to be learned about Belize. Basically, my point is that in my life I've been to many amazing places, most not even that far from home, but I would have to say that Belize it my favorite, not only just because is warm and sunny year round, but it is also so rich with culture that you would never be bored.
It is said that a picture is worth a thousand words, and even that the simplest of pictures can show much more meaning that words ever could. Even though the picture I chose to write about is very simple I hope that is catches the same essence of a tropical country like belieze that is did for me. I have also learened that everything is much more than meets the eye. I'm sure that if some people saw this picture, of any picture like it that it would bring back memories from their past. I think the greatest thing that i learned is that everything, no matter how simple, has an impact on peoples lives for one reason or another.
Thanks
