Paragraph 1:   Speech Tone

Out of all the speeches we listened to today the one thats tone resonated the most with me was the the speech by Obama. During his speech he incorporated many pauses to add emphasis to certain points that he wanted to stand out. Also, at other points he spoke louder to make sure people knew his main points. This speech style is highly effective at conveying the meaning behind many speeches, however I do believe that the speech style that would be the best fit for my speech would be the tone used by Zach Wahls. In his speech his voice has more passion and would more likely sway the audience into siding with his argument which is a very important factor in order to give a good persuasive speech.

Paragraph 2:   Speech Meaning

Out of all the speeches we listened to the speech that’s content resonated the most with me was the one by Zach Wahls. The content was heartfelt and meaningful but he also got straight to the point with what he was arguing for. Overall the I remember what he talked about more than any other speaker. He related parts of his speech to his own life which only enhanced the quality if his argument, and also incorporated many myths that he proved wrong. Using the combination of fact and heartfelt meaning he produced the most persuasive and meaningful speech out of the four.

The hard times of the 30’s required responsibility intelligence and bravery, all things that Leannie does not excel at, meaning he would have a very difficult time surviving without his companion George. Firstly Lennie lacks intelligence, he forgets things and doesn't do what he is told. When he was in the forest he couldn't remember what do when they got to the camp, George had to remind him 3 times, proving that he is not very smart. Businessmen are normally looking for smart individuals who can comprehend more difficult tasks as it is those ones that make the most money. Lennie would not be able to perform those tasks as he lacks that intelligence, making landing a job very difficult. Also Lennie has the mind a five year old, not knowing what is right and wrong and never understanding what is allowed and what is not.  George told lennie that it was not a good idea to carry a dead mouse in his pocket, an idea that most adults would comprehend but Lennie did not. Not only is a dead mouse unsanitary but it could carry diseases, this example shows how he does irrational thing that many adults would not do. To lead a normal life would be almost impossible for someone like Lennie that doesn't understand social norms. To sum up Lennie would have a very difficult time surviving without a friend like George to help him out.

Let me go
I don't wanna be your hero
I don't wanna be a big man
Just wanna fight with everyone else

Your masquerade
I don't wanna be a part of your parade
Everyone deserves a chance to
Walk with everyone else

While holding down
A job to keep my girl around
And maybe buy me some new strings
And her a night out on the weekends

And we can whisper things
Secrets from our American dreams
Baby needs some protection
But I'm a kid like everyone else

It is true that everyone deserves a chance to walk with everyone else, for all people to be equal. Although that is a dream of many, if it is possible I think it is all about circumstances. Those stories about Rags to Riches are few and far between, mostly because many of those people have gone from poverty to multimillionaires, which isn't all that common. Another big element of those stories is luck, being in the right place at the right time, take winning the lottery as an example. Also, another aspect equality is that each person has a different idea of what “equal” is, some could define being equal an being not in poverty, whereas others could see it as everyone being millionaires. The way I think of it is that its all relative. If someone tries hard enough almost anything is possible, some may just have to try harder than others.

In the story “The Necklace” I don’t necessarily think Mathilde was wrong to cover up what she lost. Desperate times call for desperate measures, especially when your social status it at stake. I would say that my reaction was different from many other peoples, I’m not ‘disgusted’ by what Mathilde did, she was right to pay her friend back. I just think that she should have been honest and told her friend what happened to the necklace. I think that Mathilde would genuinely be a good person, when this story was written even more pressure was put on women to wear the ‘right’ clothing and act the ‘right’ way. All Mathilde wanted was to live the American Dream and to be happy, unfortunately the pressure she was put under cost her the perfect life.  Then again… we would never have good stories if everything worked out as planned.
